To create a podcast reference or citation, you will need to know the name of the author or organization, title, publisher, place of publication, and publication year.

The templates and examples below will show you how to cite a podcast in MLA, APA, Chicago style, and Harvard referencing.

Citing a podcast in MLA style

Set the title of the podcast in title case and italicize it.

Set the title of the podcast in sentence case and italicize it. Do not use a period after the URL.

Citing a podcast in Harvard referencing style

The title of the podcast is set in sentence case and italicized. Use “Available at:” before the URL. Include the accessed date inside parentheses at the end.

To cite a podcast with multiple hosts in APA, the core elements required are the names of the hosts or the executive producers, date of the podcast, title of the podcast, production company, and URL. The below table shows how the in-text citation and the reference list entry are included for a podcast with multiple hosts.


In-text citation

Reference list entry

Template:

Notes:

If the podcast has two hosts, both hosts’ last names can be included in the in-text citation instead of using “et al.”

Write the title of the podcast in italics.

Mention the medium inside square brackets after the title.

Do not add a period after the URL.

To cite a podcast episode in APA, the core elements required are the name of the host or the executive producer, the date the episode was published, the title of the episode, episode number, title of the program, production company, and URL. Add the episode number, if available, after the episode title.

Mention the medium inside square brackets after the episode number or the title.

Do not add a period after the URL.

To cite a podcast in MLA style, the core elements required are the author’s name, the podcast episode name, the narrator’s name (if different from the author), the host’s name (if applicable), the date, the podcast title, the publisher/publication name, and URL (if applicable).

If relevant, cite the time or time span of the audio recording. Give the numbers of the hours, minutes, and seconds. Separate the numbers with colons, without spaces on the sides.

Note that the author’s name is given as surname followed by the first name, whereas the narrator and host’s names are in first name–surname order.
