Frequently asked questions

To cite an e-book in MLA style, the core elements required are the author or editor of the book, title, year of publication, and publisher. The below table shows how the in-text citation and the works cited entry are formatted for an e-book in MLA style.

In-text citation template & example:

(Author Surname)

(Hashmi)

Works-cited entry template & example:

Author’s Surname, First Name. Title of the Book. E-Book ed., Publisher, publication date.

Hashmi, Zain. A Blessed Olive Tree: A Spiritual Journey in Twenty Short Stories. E-Book ed., Createspace, 2017.

To cite an e-book in APA if no author is given, the core elements required for a reference list entry are the title of the book, date of publication, publisher, and URL. The in-text citation takes the title in place of the author’s last name. When used in an in-text citation, the title should be in title case (with each important word capitalized). The title should be in sentence case in your reference list (with only the first word of the title capitalized).

The below table shows how the in-text citation and the reference list entry are included for an e-book without an author in APA.

In-text citation template & example:

(Title of the E-book, year of publication)

(A Life Without Water, 2019)

Reference list entry template & example:

Title of the e-book. (Year of publication). Publisher. URL

A life without water. (2019). Pink Sand Press. https://www.amazon.com/Life-Without-Water-Marci-Bolden-ebook/dp/B07T4HMNWG/

There is no difference between citing a source with two authors having the same last name and different last names. Adding initials in in-text citations is also not necessary. The below table shows how the in-text citation and the reference list entry are included for a journal article with two authors having the same last name.

In-text citation template & example:

(Author 1 Surname & Author 2 Surname, year of publication)

(Wang & Wang, 2011)

Reference list entry template & example:

Author 1 Surname, F., & Author 2 Surname, F. (Publication Year). Title of the article. Journal Titlevolume, page range.

Wang, W., & Wang, S. (2011). Recent advances in catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide. Chemical Society Reviews, 40, 3703–3727.
