Solution #2: When to include page numbers in an in-text citation for a book
If you quote directly from a book, you always need to include page numbers in the in-text citation. If you paraphrase a specific portion of the book, it is also a good idea to include page numbers. If you are referring to a source more generally, you do not need to include page numbers. The examples below demonstrate how to format an in-text citation with page numbers for each citation style.
1. MLA
MLA style requires page numbers in their in-text citations for books. Sources with different types of location indicators (e.g., verse lines, act/scene/line in plays, etc.) should include these location types in their in-text citation. When there are no page numbers, like on websites/webpages, no page number is required. Examples:
(Smith 63)
(Shakespeare line 2)
(Macbeth 1.3.10-11)
2. APA
In APA style, page numbers are only required for quotations. That said, it’s is usually helpful and ethical to always include page numbers, when possible.
(Smith, 2021, p. 63)
3. Chicago (author-date) example
(Smith 2021, 63)
4. Harvard referencing example
(Smith, 2021, p. 63)
Solution #3: How to include page numbers that are not consecutive/non-sequential/not continuous
1. MLA
In the in-text citation, include all the page numbers/ranges for the cited information and divide the page number/ranges with a comma. In the works cited entry, include the first page the article appears on and add a plus sign after it.
In-text citation & works cited entry examples:
(Smith 2, 5-6)
Smith, John. “Example Section Title.” Fake Publication Title, 21 Dec. 2020, pp. 2+.
2. APA
In the in-text citation, include all the page numbers/ranges for the quoted information and divide the page number/ranges with a comma. In the reference list entry, list all page numbers/ranges and separate each with a comma.
In-text citation & reference list entry examples:
(Smith, 2020, p. 2, 5-6)
Smith, J. (2020, December 21). Example section title. Fake Publication Title, 2, 5-7.

Below are the guidelines, templates, and examples for citing a musical (sheet music) in MLA and APA styles.
MLA
To cite a musical (sheet music) in MLA, use the name of the composer in in-text citations. The works cited list entry includes the name of the composer, title of the piece of music, publisher name, and date of publication.
In-text citation
Template:
(Composer’s Surname)
Example:
(Coult)
Works cited list
Template:
Composer’s Surname, First Name. Title of the Music. Date of original composition (if applicable). Publisher, year.
Example:
Coult, Tom. Four Perpetual Motions (Chamber Ensemble). Faber Music, 2012.
Note
If the song is a long musical composition identified by a name, the title should be italicized. If the song is a musical composition identified by form, number, or key, the title does not need any additional formatting. If the song is not an orchestral arrangement, the title should be in quotation marks.
The date of original composition is supplemental information and does not always need to be included. But it may be helpful to add if the piece was originally composed much earlier than the sheet music you are citing or if the arrangement has changed significantly.
APA
To cite a musical (sheet music) in APA, use the name of the composer and publication year in in-text citations. The reference list entry includes the name of the composer, title of the piece of music, publisher name, and publication date.
In-text citation
Template:
(Composer’s Surname, publication year)
Example:
(Coult, 2012)
Works cited list
Template:
Composer’s Surname, F. (Year). Title of the musical [Description]. Publisher.
Example:
Coult, T. (2012). Four perpetual motions (chamber ensemble) [Sheet music]. Faber Music.
Below are the guidelines, templates, and examples for citing Shakespeare plays in MLA and APA styles.
MLA
To cite Shakespeare plays in MLA, use Shakespeare’s name in in-text citations. The works cited list entry includes Shakespeare’s name, the title of the play, publisher name, and publication date.
In-text citation
Template:
(Shakespeare)
Example:
(Shakespeare)
Works cited list
Template:
Shakespeare, William. Title of the Play. Edited by Editor’s First Name Last Name, Publisher, publication date.
Example:
Shakespeare, William. Julius Caesar. Edited by Barbara A. Mowat and Paul Werstine, Simon & Schuster, 2011.
Note
When citing a direct quote from a Shakespeare play in MLA style, use the act, scene, and line numbers separated by periods in your in-text citation, rather than a page number (e.g., Shakespeare 1.2.18).
APA
To cite Shakespeare plays in APA, use Shakespeare’s name and the original and cited publication years in in-text citations. The reference list entry includes Shakespeare’s name, the title of the play, publisher name, and original and cited publication dates.
In-text citation
Template:
(Shakespeare, Original Work Publication Year/Edited Work Publication Year)
Example:
(Shakespeare, 1599/2011)
Reference list entry
Template:
Shakespeare, W. (Publication Year). Title of the play (Editor’s F. Surname, Ed.). Publisher. (Original work published year)
Example:
Shakespeare, W. (2011). Julius Caesar (B. A. Mowat & P. Werstine, Eds.). Simon & Schuster. (Original work published 1599)
Note
When citing a direct quote from a Shakespeare play in APA style, use the act, scene, and line numbers separated by periods in your in-text citation, rather than a page number. This information should come after the publication years, preceded by a comma (e.g., Shakespeare, 1599/2011, 1.2.18).
