Ecology is defined as the study of the interactions that living organisms maintain with the natural environment and with each other. It is an interdisciplinary field associated with biology and science of earth. Ecologists study the distribution, composition, biomass, number, and changing forms of organisms within and amongst the ecosystems. Ecosystems comprise of dynamically interrelating parts starting from the organisms, the communities they make and the non-living constituents of their environment. These processes are continued by the biodiversity in their ecosystems. Biodiversity comprise of the varieties of species present in the ecosystems due to the amount of genetic variations they hold.
In contrast, environmentalism is defined as the activity of defending our environment from destruction due to human activities like pollution. The principle attitude of this movement includes the motto that our environment has got more importance than inheritance. Thus, environmentalism can be considered as a philosophical and social movement. It appeals the influence by the political process through education and activism to guard natural resources and ecosystems.
So, an environmentalist indicates someone who raises his or her voice about the environment and about the sustainable management of the resources included in it. They do so by changing individual behavior and public policies and through associating with practices that cause less wastage. Hence, I would like myself to be labeled as environmentalist. I have full faith that on bringing changes in an individual attitude can result in improvement in the environment.
In conclusion, the foremost difference between an ecologist and an environmentalist is that ecologist study science only, while environmentalist initiates political and social movements. It is possible for an ecologist to work with an environmentalist. But both these terms can never be taken under the same definition.
