To cite an article in Chicago, you need to know the source type, author, article title and subtitle, journal title, volume, issue, publication year, page range, and DOI or ISBN.

The templates and examples below are based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition. On this page, you can learn how to cite the following:

Author-Date format


For citing a journal article in Chicago, the surname of the authors and page range are used in narrative and parenthetical formats. In the absence of page numbers, the surname alone can be used.

Three Authors

For the in-text citation, list the first listed author's last name followed by "et al." In the reference list entry, list all authors.


In-text citation example:

According to Hasche et al. (2018, 874) the …

OR

… was checked (Hasche et al. 2018, 874).


Reference list entry example:
