This guide provides in-text citations and full reference examples in ACS style for the following types of sources:

Formatting in ACS style

ACS citation style has two parts:

  1. In-text citation

  2. Reference list

In-text citations

In-text citations provide information from a source within the text of your work. The citations are arranged sequentially in the text, by placing a number italicized inside parenthesis or in superscript form or using an author–date format.

You can also cite more than one source at a time:

  • Example sentence (1,2) or Example sentence 1,2 or Example sentence (Rose, 2003)

  • Example sentence (13) or Example sentence 1–3 or Example sentence (Rose, 2003; Goldstein and Fox, 2004; Watson et al. 2007)

  • Example sentence (1,249) or Example sentence 1,2–4,9 or Example sentence (Rose, 2003; Goldstein and Fox, 2004; Watson et al. 2007)

In this guide we shall only consider examples of citations inside parenthesis. The note number corresponds to the source’s number in the reference list.

Reference list

The reference list is placed at the end of your paper and given a title of “References.” References are listed in the order the sources are mentioned in your paper; they are not listed in alphabetical order. For references having more than six authors, use six authors’ names followed by “et al.”.
